Breed Introduction
The Shetland Sheepdog originated in Scotland and is named after its place of origin as Shetland sheepdog, abbreviated as sheltie. In ancient times, the Shetland Sheepdog was an excellent herding dog, known for its cold resistance, physical strength, broad vision, loyalty, intelligence, and reliability, making it suitable for a wide range of uses. The Shetland Sheepdog has been around for over a hundred years and is one of the most popular dog breeds in Japan, primarily distributed in the UK and North America. It is believed to have been bred from Scottish Collies and Spitz (companions of Nordic fishermen); some also believe that the Shetland Sheepdog originated from the King Charles Spaniel.
The development of the Shetland Sheepdog originated in Scotland and is named after its place of origin as Shetland sheepdog, abbreviated as sheltie. It is believed to be a cross between Scottish Collies (working dogs of the whalers in the Shetland Islands) and Spitz (companions of Nordic fishermen). Some believe it originated from the King Charles Spaniel. The Shetland Sheepdog has over a hundred years of history, is one of the most popular breeds in Japan, and is primarily distributed in the UK and North America. For centuries, this dog has been serving in herding and guarding duties on the Shetland Islands, which are rocky islands off the coast of Scotland where animals are generally smaller in size.
The first Shetland Club was established in Shetland in 1908, and the Shetland Club was also established in Scotland the following year, with the breed being introduced to England in the late 19th century. After being introduced to the United States in 1911, it became highly popular and is now found in countries around the world. The first Shetland Sheepdog registered with the AKC (American Kennel Club) was ‘Lord Scott,’ registered in 1911, a deep sable sheepdog from the Shetland Islands of Scotland. Its owner was John G. Sherman, Jr. from New York.
