Breed Introduction
Originating from Wales, England, with origins dating back to 1200. Until the 1850s, this breed was the only one preserved among known Welsh breeds. Traditionally, in Wales, it was used to herd cattle, its small size allowing it to maneuver within herds and grasp the legs of cattle to control their movement. In Wales, there are two types of Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan.
Later, most of the land that originally belonged to the king and was not suitable for grazing slowly fell into the hands of shepherds. With sufficient grazing land, shepherds no longer needed to roam for pasture, and the Corgis clearly lost their former glory. Shepherds stopped spending considerable amounts to feed these ‘useless’ Corgis, leading to a significant decrease in the Corgi population, replaced by sheepdogs more suited for nearby herding. However, a few Corgis remained to guard homes.
These Corgis later mixed with the bloodlines of other sheepdogs, becoming today’s Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
