Breed Introduction
The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog has also been known as the Czechoslovak Wolfdog since 1955. This breed was developed by mixing the Carpathian wolf with a purebred German Shepherd. It looks like a dog but very much like a wolf, with a lively, brave, and very active personality. It is extremely loyal to its owner and gentle. It can survive strongly in harsh environments.
The development of the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog originated from a biological experiment that took place in CSSR in 1955. This involved the hybrid of a German Shepherd and a Carpathian wolf. The experiment proved that the offspring of a male dog and a female wolf is the same as the offspring of a female dog and a male wolf, and they can be raised artificially. This type of mating generally has the genetic conditions for breeding continuity.
In 1965, a decision was made to breed this new variety. This would combine the excellent qualities of both wolves and dogs, with breeding carried out under strict government control. Through continuous backbreeding with wolves, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog was recognized as a national breed by the public committee of the breeding association of CSSR in 1982, and was recognized as a purebred dog by the organization in 1984, thereafter no longer having backbreeding with wolves and becoming an independent breed.
