Breed Introduction
The Scottish Deerhound, as the name suggests, originates from Scotland and was originally used for deer hunting.
It is praised as ‘the most perfect creature created by God,’ and besides its coat, its basic characteristics are very similar to that of a Greyhound.
This deerhound, with its ideal appearance, has a documented breeding history dating back to the Middle Ages, when Scottish chieftains used them for hunting assistance.
These dogs chased deer in the dense forests of the Scottish Highlands, and their graceful and gentle form then belonged only to the nobility of Scotland.
Since the large-scale deforestation of the Highland forests and the extensive use of hunting guns from the 18th century onwards, this breed seems to have lost its original standing.
Currently, this dog is more commonly found in South Africa, while its native Scotland has very few left.
They resemble Greyhounds in appearance and have coats that enable them to adapt to their environment, getting along well with other dogs.
