Breed Introduction
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, native to the South of Canada on the Nova Scotia Peninsula, is a medium-sized dog with a well-proportioned and compact structure, muscular and strong bones. This breed demonstrates high agility, alertness, and resilience. They show a slightly sad demeanor, but when working, they become very excited and highly focused.
It is the smallest breed capable of retrieving ducks, originating from the South of Canada, where migratory ducks and geese appear seasonally. Indigenous people trained their dogs to imitate rusty-colored foxes, wagging their tails and jumping along the shore to attract curious ducks, which would then swim toward the shore, allowing hunters hiding nearby to catch the ducks. Settlers utilized this unusual hunting technique, breeding the local Indian brown dogs to develop the duck-retrieving dog (officially known as the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever).
