Breed Introduction
The Welsh Corgi, also known as the short-legged dog of Wales, is a very popular breed nowadays. With its short legs and long body, it has a cute appearance that especially appeals to women. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has existed in England since at least the year 920. It is derived from two varieties, the Cardigan and the Pembroke. The Pembroke is more famous than the Cardigan. The breed was brought over by Flemish workers, and due to its fox-like head, it is believed that this breed is closely related to the ancestors of the Spitz. However, some believe it was created through the crossbreeding of the Swedish short-legged long-bodied dog and indigenous dogs that came to Wales through trade with Sweden. Both the Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis are adept at herding cattle. Due to their light build and quick movements, these dogs can escape quickly when livestock kick back. In 1934, the UK officially recognized the Cardigan and Pembroke as two different breeds. Through continuous breeding and training by breeders, the innate wildness that they shared with other dogs has gradually been eliminated, leading to the Corgi’s high market price today.
The Corgi is actually the Welsh Corgi (a famous breed). The Welsh Corgi is divided into two types: Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. When compared, the Pembroke Corgi has a shorter body shape, straighter, lighter legs, whereas the Welsh Corgi has better fur texture; but in terms of temperament, the Pembroke appears to be restless, easily excited, and not as docile as the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
From Richard I in the 12th century to Queen Elizabeth II today, the Corgi has always been a pet of the British royal family.
