Breed Introduction
The Portuguese Water Dog boasts a history spanning several centuries, although its distant origins remain unclear. Some suggest it may have originated from North Africa, while others trace its roots to regions along the Sino-Russian border. Native to the coastal areas of Portugal, this breed accompanied fishermen on voyages as far as Iceland.
Once on the brink of extinction, with only 60 dogs remaining in the 1960s, the Portuguese Water Dog has since regained popularity and is now widely distributed across continental Europe.
A natural swimmer and diver, this dog is known for its unique talents and perseverance. It has historically assisted its owners by recovering lost fishing gear in the sea, herding fish, and serving as a communicator between boats or between boats and the shore.
In addition to its work ethic, the Portuguese Water Dog is a loyal companion and vigilant guard, making it an incredibly practical and diligent working dog capable of performing its duties around the clock.
