Breed Introduction
The Golden Retriever originated in Scotland, UK, in the 19th century, and the records regarding the breed’s lineage or recognition by associations vary. Sir Dudley Mailsbank (Tweedmoss) wrote extensively about the breed’s origins in his breeding book, and there are also legends suggesting that the Golden Retriever evolved from a breed of dogs used in a Russian circus. However, it is more similar to a mix of yellow flat-coated retrievers and Tweed water spaniels, as well as later introduced Irish setters, Labradors, and bloodhounds. After 1920, the breed was officially known as the Golden Retriever, previously recognized as the yellow flat-coated retriever.
The Golden Retriever was developed in the 19th century by a Scottish nobleman, crossing small Newfoundland dogs, Irish setters, and the now-extinct wavy-coated retrievers to create a golden long-haired retriever. This breed eventually became well-known as the Golden Retriever. At that time, this dog was particularly adept at retrieving game, as they have very soft mouths. The Golden Retriever has strong swimming abilities and can bring prey back from the water to its owner. It is also a loyal and friendly family companion and can be trained as an excellent guide dog.
The Golden Retriever is robust and eager to work, capable of catching waterfowl, and can swim in water in any climate. It is very popular among hunters and mainly kept as a house pet, classified as a large dog.
