Breed Introduction
The Patterdale Terrier, sometimes referred to as the Black and Tan Terrier, is one of these breeds. It is an energetic, unrestrained hunting dog, bred primarily as a ratting dog and hunting companion.
Its bull terrier ancestry makes it too fierce to work as a pack hunting dog, but they are extremely excellent digging dogs, willing to attack burrowing mammals.
Different types of terriers used to be found in every village in Northern England. Eventually, people began breeding this dog according to kennel standards, which weakened the selective breeding of them, yet in some remote areas, unrecognized varieties still thrive. They survive under the protection of local breeders.
The breed is not known outside of the UK and is usually found around the Lake District and Yorkshire regions.
The Patterdale Terrier is used as a hunter for rats, foxes, and rabbits, bred not for decoration but for utility.
Brave, stubborn, strong, and lively, they are very agile in water, close to their owners, gentle with children, joyful, and intelligent, making for excellent companion dogs.
They are wary of strangers and require strict but gentle training.
