Breed Introduction
The Havanese is an ancient breed in the Bichon family, with the earliest mention of its ancestors tracing back to the Polynesian period in the Mediterranean region (23–79 B.C.), and this breed may have originated in Malta. Some dogs in Spain and Italy may have descended from the Havanese, and today they are known as Havanese.
The modern Havanese descends from local dogs discovered in Cuba, with many entering the United States after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The Havanese is a sturdy, short-legged small dog with soft, dense, untrimmed hair. Its fluffy tail curls upward towards its back, making it an affectionate and charming dog that is lively and adorable with a bouncy gait.
It originated in Cuba and dates back to the 18th century. It is said to have been brought to Cuba by sailors from the Canary Islands. It is quite popular in the United States.
