Breed Introduction
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a long history on Swiss farms. In the mid-19th century, their numbers began to decline, and they were nearly extinct at the beginning of this century. Only a small number of purebred dogs remained, which were crossbred with short-haired Saint Bernards. The current population has gradually increased, with imports to the United States starting in 1968.
It is the largest of the four Swiss Mountain Dog breeds. Primarily used for herding and livestock guarding, it also serves as a family guardian and draft dog. It is energetic and tireless, maintaining a high level of energy both day and night, with good jumping ability.
The breed is quiet, easy to train, and can also serve as a companion dog. However, due to its need for large activity spaces, it is not very suitable for urban dwellers.
