Breed Introduction
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a famous raccoon hunting dog produced by the crossbreeding of the Bloodhound and the Foxhound, known for its howling when the prey is treed. It has also been successfully used to hunt bears, deer, opossums, and mountain lions in complex terrains. It can withstand the harsh cold of winter and the heat of summer.
Although it usually has a gentle temperament, it becomes a tenacious tracker when it catches the scent of prey. The Black and Tan Coonhound is considered a working dog because it is very energetic, alert, and friendly to people. While generally mild-mannered, it becomes a determined tracker upon smelling prey. It is known for its ability to tree raccoons, hence it is also referred to as a “treeing” dog. Hunters distinguish and identify them by their different barks.
It relies entirely on its sense of smell to perform tasks, and its powerful, rhythmic gait gives it speed. It has a calm temperament, enjoys being outdoors, and is friendly. As a scent-tracking hound, it should be able to work closely with other hunting dogs, allowing for some reserve but should never be shy or aggressive. Attacking humans or other dogs is considered a fault.
