Breed Introduction
The Kerry Blue Terrier, also known as the Irish Terrier, is the national dog of Ireland. It originated in the 19th century and was first noticed in the mountains of Kerry Blue, hence its name. The Kerry Blue Terrier has been bred in its pure form for hundreds of years in its homeland. The origins of this breed are unclear, with legends suggesting that it descended from dogs that escaped the wreck of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and drifted to the Irish coast, becoming descendants of the Spanish dog lineage. Others believe that the Kerry Blue Terrier was developed from the bloodline of the relatively large Irish Wolfhound.
The Kerry Blue Terrier is known for its noble, lively, and intelligent characteristics, and this terrier is trainable and skilled in work, used in Ireland and England for capturing prey and various birds, and can retrieve caught game from water or land. This breed is also adept at herding sheep and cattle. The Kerry Blue Terrier possesses a wide range of talents and has an instinct for tracking and retrieving game. It is suitable for various forms of work, is easy to train, and has a tenacious spirit, making it hard to surpass as a guard dog. Historically, the Kerry Blue Terrier has served as a police dog in England.
If properly cared for, with specialized food and designated training, the Kerry Blue Terrier has a long lifespan, remaining loyal to its duties even in old age. In fact, Kerry Blue Terriers aged 6 to 8 years are still considered young dogs.
