Breed Introduction
The Plott Hound is a large breed of hunting dog that originated in the United States during the 18th century. These dogs are medium-sized with a muscular build and a brindled coat, known for being intelligent, alert, and confident. Unlike many American hunting breeds, the Plott Hound is a purely American creation without ancestry from English hounds.
This breed gets its name from the Plott family, who immigrated from Germany to the mountainous regions of North Carolina in the USA around 1750. For seven generations, the Plott family carefully bred these dogs within their own lineage. It is believed that the initial dogs were used for hunting wild boars in Germany and later had bloodhound and American mixed-breed dog genes introduced.
Historically, the Plott Hound’s activity was largely confined to the Plott family’s area because they rarely sold their dogs. Consequently, when the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1946, very few Plott Hounds were found outside of North Carolina. Since wild boars are not native to that region, they became primarily known for their skill in hunting bears and raccoons.
Plott Hounds also demonstrate effectiveness in tracking other game such as coyotes, bobcats, and wolves, showcasing strong tracking abilities that allow them to locate prey even in very remote locations. They are recognized for their incredible tenacity, hard-working nature, ample stamina, and extraordinary hunting instincts. Their bravery and enduring stamina are highly valued. Through long-term, careful breeding, the breed has become stronger and more stable.
While Plott Hounds can adapt to home life and make excellent companions, the majority of them are still primarily utilized as dedicated hunting dogs.
