Breed Introduction
The Basset Hound, also known as the French Hound, originated in France. It is an ancient and noble breed of hunting dog with French ancestry, later developing in England. Initially, in France and Belgium, Basset Hounds were primarily used to track game such as hares, deer, and other prey that could be followed by their footprints.
The Basset Hound is renowned for its keen sense of smell and its humorous temperament. It is capable of emitting a deep, distinctive sound when chasing prey, making it famous in the world of hunting dogs. With its long body and short legs, it is often considered one of the most recognizable breeds, alongside the Dachshund.
In 1880, the Basset Hound was brought to England by nobility. After the American War of Independence, it was gifted to George Washington, which led to its introduction to America. Through careful breeding and raising, the American Kennel Club allowed its registration in 1885. Today, it is highly regarded as a companion dog in both England and America.
