Breed Introduction
The Bedlington Terrier originated in England and dates back to the 19th century. Initially named the Rosemary Terrier after its place of origin, it was heavier and shorter-legged than today’s breed and was used for hunting foxes, hares, and badgers.
It is said that in 1825, it was bred with a female dog from Bedlington, producing what we now know as the Bedlington Terrier. In the late 18th to early 19th centuries, through interbreeding with breeds like the Whippet and Dandy Dinmont Terrier, this breed was refined to such a height, beauty, and speed while retaining its original vitality and stamina.
The Bedlington Terrier is bold, robust, and agile, resembling a small lamb but possessing a lion-like heart. It has always been used to drive away small pests, hunting otters, foxes, and more. Its character contrasts sharply with its beautiful appearance; it has a strong fighting spirit and a robust jaw. Through the interbreeding with Whippets and Dandy Dinmont Terriers, this breed was further developed while maintaining its vitality and stamina.
It is important for dog owners to understand common canine diseases and daily behavioral characteristics, which is vital for both dogs and dog lovers. Grooming the dog’s coat ensures hygiene, which is also essential for families with children.
