Breed Introduction
The Black Russian Terrier is a large, powerful dog with high energy. This dog has a large skeleton and well-developed muscles. This breed originated in Russia and was once used as a protective guard dog. It must be well-proportioned, have a good temperament, be loyal, courageous, and strong, with great endurance. This dog must have a massive frame and heavy bones. Females are noticeably gentler, but they are not weak in physique.
Tchiorny Terrier and Black Russian Terrier (or Russian Black Terrier) refer to the same breed, but the UKC divides them into two ‘independent’ breeds: Tchiorny Terrier and Black Russian Terrier. Additionally, the listed groups are different; Tchiorny Terrier is classified under Terrier – Group 7, while Black Russian Terrier is classified under Guardian Dog – Group 1. It is unclear whether this is a mistake by the UKC or a lack of knowledge from the editors at the pet website.
This breed was developed in the Soviet Red Star Army camp through hybridization with large Schnauzers, Airedales, Rottweilers, and many other breeds, and was recognized as a breed in the 1940s, with its standard revised in 1993.
