Breed Introduction
The Border Collie (English: Border-Collie), also known as the Scottish Sheepdog, is a sheepdog that originated from the border regions of Scotland and England, primarily assisting in herding on farms, hence the name ‘sheepdog’. The Border Collie is known for its high energy and ability to learn tricks easily, and is considered by academia to be the smartest dog breed. It possesses a strong herding instinct, is naturally intelligent, and is adept at reading cues, able to understand its owner’s commands, and can move or rotate sheep by simply gazing at them.
This breed has been used as a sheepdog for many years. Its greatest characteristics are intelligence, strong learning ability, high comprehension, ease of training, gentleness, loyalty, and obedience, with its loyalty being described as shadow-like. The full name is Border Collie Sheepdog. In the Scottish Borders, it is also known as the Bordie Sheepdog; this breed has a long history of being used as a sheepdog, officially named ‘Border Collie’ in 1915.
The Border Collie, also known as the Border Collie Dog, is a very intelligent breed, primarily found in four countries: the UK, the USA, Australia, and New Zealand. American scientists have found through extensive testing that the obedience IQ of the Border Collie exceeds that of the German Shepherd and Poodle, ranking first among over a hundred breeds.
In the earliest periods, the sheep herded in Scotland and the dogs used to guard them were found in the Scottish Isles, originating from dogs brought by clerics who migrated from Ireland to Scotland before the Vikings invaded. In such a rugged geographical environment, people relied on dogs to help gather, drive, and guard livestock. According to the origins of modern herding dogs, they possess the ability of ‘eye control’, which was developed and trained by shepherds in the border areas of England and Scotland, thus the breed is referred to as the ‘Border Collie’.
