Breed Introduction
The Brussels Griffon is a small breed originating from Belgium, historically used as a stable dog and also rode in two-wheeled horse-drawn carriages. This breed has ancestry related to the Affenpinscher, and is divided into two types: the smooth-coated variety (Griffon Bruxellois) and the rough-coated variety, which has unique facial whiskers.
In some countries, the black-coated variety of the rough-coated type is called the Belgian Griffon, while others retain the name Brussels Griffon. The Brussels Griffon is known for its bravery, adaptability, and friendliness; it enjoys being pampered by its owner and needs sufficient exercise, but is not recommended as a pet for households with young children.
The historical origins of the Brussels Griffon suggest that the Affenpinscher might be among its ancestors, with other breeds like the Pug having played an important role in its breeding. In North America, the ears are commonly cropped, and the tails are often docked. This breed has prominent facial whiskers and bears a resemblance to the ancient figure Zhong Kui.
In the 15th century, it was a local dog in Belgium, and by 1880, after breeding with Pugs, it produced a similar snout, along with the addition of German Affenpinscher bloodlines. It became a beloved pet of Belgian royalty through the ages. By the 19th century, it became fashionable for this breed to be found sitting by the side of a rider in a carriage. It was also used in stables to guard against rats, commonly known as the stable lion.
This breed leaves a wise and intelligent impression, appealing to both nobility and common folk alike. The unique charm of this dog stands apart from other handsome toy breeds. The Brussels Griffon is a representative toy breed. Since 1883, the Belgian Dog Club has established a first-class association and documented this breed, and in 1905 established a breed standard. This breed is divided into red long-haired and black-haired types.
While the population of this breed is relatively low in mainland China, its serene appearance and frequently joyful demeanor show great potential for development.
