Breed Introduction
The Burmese Cat, known for its round shape, features a rounded head and body from any angle. Most are found in Yangon, Myanmar.
It has 10 varieties and was developed by American scientist Dr. Joseph Thomson in the early 1930s. The ideal specimen is a rich sable brown, and all Burmese Cats have yellow eyes.
They are known to be stocky, often described as ‘a brick wrapped in silk’. Their fur is very short and smooth like fibers, requiring no daily grooming.
Burmese Cats are lively, gentle in voice, sociable and expressive, courageous, intelligent, and affectionate.
They mature quickly, starting to come into heat around 5 months and are capable of mating and giving birth at 7 months. Their lifespan is relatively long, generally between 16 to 18 years, with some living even longer.
The ancestor of the Burmese Cat was a brown cat brought to America from Myanmar in 1930. It was first bred by Dr. Thomson with American Shorthairs.
The breed has many enthusiasts in the U.S., and at a cat show, it was once ranked third in the lineup.
