Breed Introduction
The Canadian Hairless Cat (Canadian Hairless), also known as the Sphynx Cat, was developed by cat enthusiasts in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1966 from a litter of nearly hairless kittens, specifically bred for cat lovers who are allergic to cat fur. This breed is a pet cat resulting from a natural genetic mutation, and except for some thin and soft fetal hair on the ears, mouth, nose, front part of the tail, and feet, the rest of the body is hairless, with wrinkled and elastic skin.
The Canadian Hairless Cat is gentle, independent, non-aggressive, and can coexist with other cats and dogs. The historical origin of the Sphynx Cat, also known as the hairless Sphynx, dates back to records of hairless cats kept by indigenous people in Mexico over 1700 years ago. However, it wasn’t until this breed gained success in cat shows that people began to notice and take an interest in it. The TlCA recognizes this breed, which was identified as a rare breed in 2005.
The earliest recorded hairless cats were a pair of brothers named Nelly and Dick, born in the same litter. In 1903, a man named Sinick from New Mexico purchased them from the Pueblo Native Americans. In 1966, hairless cats were rediscovered in Toronto, Canada, giving rise to the name Canadian Hairless Cat. Shortly thereafter, hairless cats were also discovered in Minnesota, USA. As the reputation of hairless cats grew, reports of hairless cats began to emerge worldwide. Consequently, some cat lovers bred the Sphynx Cat, which is less susceptible to genetic diseases and not a product of inbreeding.
