Breed Introduction
Arrived in former East Germany in the 1960s, primarily used as border patrol dogs, especially patrolling along the Berlin Wall. In 1989, after the Berlin Wall was dismantled, 7,000 strong patrol dogs were disbanded. Many Caucasian Shepherds were given to ordinary families in Germany. Fine breeding in Germany ensured a bright future for this cautious and independent dog, and as it became more popular, breeders paid more attention to selecting for their gentle character.
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is one of the largest breeds in the world. Although this dog is incredibly fierce, it is very loyal to its owner and enjoys close companionship with them. Currently, it is mainly used for livestock guarding and security.
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog originated in Russia and is robust and powerful, widely seen in Russia and other areas of the former Soviet Union. In Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, loose breeding procedures ensured that this breed became popular among the public. Although its original role as a shepherd dog for sheep has diminished over time.
