Breed Introduction
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel descends from its noble ancestors and appears alongside royal children in paintings from the 15th to 16th centuries. Common people could not afford to keep this breed, which never worked. King Charles I had a great fondness for this dog, hence the name.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the favorite dogs of the British royal family, adored by Queen Mary of Scotland and Kings Charles I and II. This breed is a variant of the Charles Spaniel and has been modified under the influence of the Blenheim Spaniel to have a shorter muzzle, also known as the carpet dog. This breed is slightly larger than the Charles Spaniel, lively and active, with a gentlemanly expression, making it popular among the British upper class. Among toy dogs in the UK, it is highly sought after, ranking second in popularity after the Yorkshire Terrier.
The appearance of the dog we know today is that of a round-headed, upturned-nosed, and protruding-jawed small English hunting dog. The current appearance of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is very popular, while the appearance of its ancestors has disappeared.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was established in the UK in 1928, officially recognized by the dog club in 1944, and in 1946, the breed received its first championship certificate. Since then, this dog has become one of the most popular breeds in the UK.
