Breed Introduction
Chuan Dong Hound, also known as Chongqing Dog, Linshui Dog (Chuan Dong breed from Linshui area), Guang Dog (Chuan Dong breed from Guang’an area), Zhu Dog (Chuan Dong breed from Dazhu area), Dong Dog (Chuan Dong breed from Huaying Mountain·Wushi·Hechuan area), mountain-chasing dog, and mountain-pushing dog, is one of China’s four major hunting dogs. This breed originated in the Huaying Mountain range and surrounding areas at the border of Sichuan and Chongqing, and is an ancient and primitive dog breed. It has a history of over 2000 years dating back to the Han Dynasty. Its numbers continuously decreased in the 1960s, and it wasn’t until the 1970s that it was protected and successfully bred, classified as a fierce dog of China. Primarily used for hunting.
In the early 1990s, dog enthusiasts Zhou Guang, Li Changli, Jiang Shengming and others conducted extensive research in its native area. These dogs belong to the same breed, with only slight variations in body size and coat color due to geographical differences; this breed did not have a standardized name. To develop the resources of Chinese dog breeds, Mr. Zhou Guang scientifically and succinctly named it Chuan Dong Hound based on its origin and main functions. It was recommended in the second issue of “Chinese Dog Raising” magazine in 1994. After Chongqing was made a municipality, “Chuan Dong” became a broader geographical term, along with the fact that this breed has four major functions: hunting, fighting, exhibition, and guarding. In April 2000, the Chongqing Pet Association decided to rename it to “Chongqing Dog”, hence the name “Chongqing Dog” was established.
