Breed Introduction
Czech Terrier, also known as Bohemian Terrier. Originating in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it was developed in the 1940s by Czech and Slovak geneticist Dr. F. Halak and was recognized in 1963. Its coat is luxurious and silky, with colors including black and yellow. The head is long with a full beard, prominent eyebrows, a larger nose, and sturdy legs. The dog weighs 5.5 to 8 kilograms and stands 25 to 36 centimeters tall. It is alert, strong, obedient, good-tempered, very friendly to children, and makes a good watchdog, being quite popular in the United States.
The Czech Terrier has a long head that is somewhat large. The top of the skull is noticeably arched, with a moderate width between the ears and a slightly narrower space between the eyebrows. There are slight wrinkles on the forehead, and the cheeks are not protruding. The nose bridge is straight, the jaw is strong, and the lips fit well. The teeth have a scissor or level bite. The eyes are of medium size, with deep-set sockets and a warm expression. The neck is of medium length, strong, and clean with no loose flesh. The shoulder muscles are well-developed. The backline is straight but slightly arched at the waist. The waist is muscular, relatively long and wide. The chest is rounded. The abdomen is moderately tucked up. The forelimbs are straight and sturdy. The hind limbs are parallel when viewed from the back, with well-developed thigh muscles. The feet are relatively large, with arched toes and strong nails. The pads are full. The hind feet are smaller than the front feet. There are two basic color tones: yellow, gray, and white markings, with occasional white collars appearing.
In 1949, geneticist František Halak bred the Czech Terrier by crossing Scottish Terriers and Sealyham Terriers to create a dog breed that is slimmer in shape, softer in coat, and capable of burrowing into the nests of prey, leading to the development of the Czech Terrier in 1959. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1963
