Breed Introduction
The Manx Cat is an unusual breed of tailless cat. It has a body shape similar to that of the British Shorthair, but its hind legs are longer than its front legs, which gives it a rabbit-like gait. An ideal Manx Cat can be described with one word: round. It has a rounded body, muscular facial structure, and appears cylindrical. It has a short back with visible muscle in its hindquarters and thighs. The most notable feature is its lack of a tail; to check if a cat is truly a Manx, you can try to place your thumb in the indentation where a tail would typically grow. A version of the Manx Cat may have a short and thickened tail. Its forelimbs are short and sturdy, and its hind limbs are long and well-developed, giving it a high rear and a bouncy, rabbit-like jump when moving. Its head is large and round, and the body is short, appearing round from head to ribcage to hindquarters. It has a thick coat that is neat, luxurious, and clean. The fur is double-layered, with a short dense undercoat that feels cottony, covered by a layer of short outer hair. They are heavier boned.
There are several legends about the origins of the Manx Cat: 1. In the 1930s, a plague struck the cats on the island, resulting in the death of half the cats, and the surviving cats later gave birth to kittens without tails. Islanders found the tailless cats strange and specifically crafted variations of silver, wood, cloth, and ceramic cats as souvenirs to attract tourists. 2. The tale that the Manx Cat was late for Noah’s Ark and had its tail caught in the closing door. 3. The earliest Manx Cats were mutant cats brought to the Isle of Man by a Spanish merchant fleet in the 16th century. The island’s geographical isolation allowed this tailless breed to thrive.
The Isle of Man is located between the British Isles and has a curious name: ‘Isle of Man’. The Manx Cat is often referred to as the ‘Isle of Man’s Manx Cat’. It is a peculiar breed and is the only cat breed without a tail in the world, regarded as a distinctive feature of the Isle of Man. It is rumored that the feline plague in the 1930s led to the survival of tailless cats. The Manx Cat is one of the world’s top eight famous cats and was a favorite pet of Edward VII.
