Breed Introduction
The Norwegian Lundehund was once used to catch puffins, leading to the development of many interesting characteristics: each paw has six toes, their necks can turn 180°, they can raise their heads to touch their forehead to their back, their ears can completely close to prevent mud and water from entering, and they can lie flat on the ground with their belly pressed down.
Unfortunately, due to a small birth rate (the mother can only give birth to 1 to 2 puppies at a time), canine distemper (an untreatable fatal disease), and other factors, there were only 6 Norwegian Lundehunds left in the world by 1963. Luckily, with careful breeding, their numbers have been steadily increasing and there are now approximately 1500 worldwide.
