Breed Introduction
The Old English Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog with moderately long hair that hangs down along the natural contours of its body. Its body is long and sloping, strong but not bulky. Its intelligent and curious expression is one of the significant characteristics that attract humans, and its calm and composed demeanor has won the hearts of countless people.
Historically, it is said to have been passed down from sailors who brought Polish Lowland Sheepdogs to Scotland centuries ago, where they interbred with local breeds, particularly the old English sheepdog. It is said that two different categories of bearded dogs developed: one smaller, primarily assisting shepherds in the Scottish Highlands by barking continuously to drive away straggling and hidden sheep, and another larger type mainly found in the Scottish Lowlands, covered in rough black hair. Modern bearded dogs are believed to be a fusion of these two breeds. Although the early history of the bearded dog is not very clear, literature from the 18th and 19th centuries indicates that bearded dogs in northern and western Scotland were used to drive livestock to market. By 1891, Thomas Gray described the bearded dog as having a coat resembling a shoe mat.
The Old English Sheepdog, also known as the Highland Sheepdog, is a breed that loves outdoor activities and can also become a part of the family. Its appearance is similar to that of the English sheepdog, but it is slimmer and does not have a docked tail. The Old English Sheepdog appears almost identical to the old English sheepdog, just slightly lighter and thinner. Naturally alert and active, its strong body is covered with medium-length fluffy hair. It is said to have been passed down from sailors who brought Polish Lowland Sheepdogs to Scotland centuries ago.
Not only is it a hardworking dog, but it also adapts well to home life, leading to a rapid increase in its numbers as family pets and companion dogs. The Old English Sheepdog has a hardworking personality and is willing to sleep outdoors.
