Breed Introduction
Originally called the Patterdale Terrier, it was developed in the Lake District of Northern England from a cross between the Bedlington Terrier and the old-fashioned English rough-haired terrier. There were originally many branches, and it was classified as one breed in 1912.
Similar to the Welsh Terrier but slightly smaller in size, it has a deep and narrow body that allows it to easily burrow into rock dens to perform its work. It has long enough legs to adapt to various rugged terrains. Historically used to hunt small animals such as badgers, foxes, and otters, it could chase prey in water and uneven terrain.
This beautiful breed later transitioned into a popular companion dog and show dog, winning championships in shows in 1967 and 1968. It was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1921.
