Breed Introduction
The Poodle, also known as the “Curly Dog” or “French Poodle”, is a very intelligent and hunting-loving breed that is now mainly noted for its show coat. This breed is one of the most popular today.
The exact origin of the Poodle is unclear, but it has a 400-year history in Western Europe. This dog is versatile and can display noble behavior in any environment. Poodles are smart, lively, good-natured, and very approachable, making them a loyal breed.
Poodles are divided into three types: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Generally speaking, the Standard Poodle is the healthiest among the three types.
It is generally believed that the Poodle pattern found along the Mediterranean coast after the 1st century is very similar to the modern Poodle of the 20th century, with the pattern being clipped into a lion-like shape, resembling the Poodles seen in early dog shows. Therefore, in Malta, known for the Maltese and Toy Poodles, the Poodle must have some connection with the breeds that existed on the island at that time.
Similarly, the Poodle has some relation to the Spanish Water Dog; even if the two do not come from a common ancestor, at least their ancestors must have hybridized in ancient times.
