Breed Introduction
The Pug (pug, also known as Haba Dog) is a stable-tempered small dog breed, characterized by a stable, cheerful, charming, noble, friendly, and lovely personality. This breed was officially named ‘Pug’ at the end of the 18th century, with its ancient meaning referring to a ghost, lion’s nose, or small monkey. Its characteristic movement resembles that of a boxer, and it communicates through snorting sounds and a noise similar to a horse’s snort.
Some experts believe this dog originated in the Scottish Lowlands and was brought back to the West by Dutch merchants after reaching Asia; others believe it is an Eastern breed, derived from the short-haired variety of the Pekingese, actually a breed from Northeast China, where the Manchu people refer to it as Haba Dog.
The Pug is a considerate and adorable small dog breed that does not require much exercise or frequent grooming but needs companionship. It is suitable as a family companion for young women.
There are two theories regarding the origin of the Pug. One theory suggests that this dog originated in China during the Han Dynasty and was brought back to Europe by European merchants, with continuous introductions from the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and British after 1516. Later, the French, Italians, and Russians also brought Pugs back to their countries, making them widespread throughout Europe. After improvements and breeding, they have become popular worldwide, especially among elderly women. The other theory is that this dog originated in the Scottish Lowlands and was brought back to the West by Dutch merchants after reaching Asia.
