Breed Introduction
The Redbone Coonhound is a breed developed by crossing bloodhounds with ancient Irish hounds, resulting in a breed that is superior to its predecessors. Raccoons are also found in Georgia, in the southern United States, where locals are aware of hounds specifically bred for raccoon hunting. Thus, they conducted breeding experiments in hopes of developing a local raccoon hunting dog breed.
The head is strong, featuring the long and broad muzzle typical of hounds, with large, flat, drooping ears that extend to the neck. The eyes are dark and expressive; the tail is long, strong, and sword-shaped. The coat is dense and soft; the color is often a solid shade resembling red, which is why it is called the ‘Redbone Coonhound.’
