Breed Introduction
The Schnauzer, also known as the ‘Schnautzer’, originated in Germany. The ancestors of the Schnauzer contain bloodlines from both the Poodle and the German Wire-haired Pinscher and is a highly energetic breed. Its distinctive eyebrows and beard resemble an old man’s features, which are the main characteristics of this breed.
Schnauzers can be categorized into three sizes: Miniature, Standard, and Giant. Among these, the Standard Schnauzer is the oldest breed. As depicted in paintings from the 15th to 16th centuries, they were popular family dogs then and could also serve as livestock guard dogs or night watchmen.
Before World War I, Schnauzers were primarily responsible for guarding and transporting crops in the German market; during World War I, they were used as messenger dogs and rescue dogs. The Standard Schnauzer that existed before the 15th century was bred from the German Wire-haired Pinscher and local rough-coated dogs, also including terrier bloodlines.
The Giant breed was developed from a mix of the Standard Schnauzer, the Flemish Shepherd, and the Great Dane bloodlines and was designated by King Louis XIV to protect the court and the queens, continuing to this day, naturally becoming a French police dog.
