Breed Introduction
The Scottish Sheepdog is a star among spirited dogs: some dogs are loved for their small and beautiful appearance, while others gain their owner’s trust through their understanding nature. The Scottish Sheepdog clearly belongs to the latter category. From ancient herding dogs to the leading roles in films, its alertness, intelligence, and hard work leave a deep impression, earning it the title of a star dog that can accompany humans for a lifetime.
The Scottish Sheepdog originated in the Scottish Lowlands, with its name derived from the local black sheep called Collie. Like many other breeds, it was favored by Queen Victoria. In 1860, when the Queen visited Scotland, she took several back to Windsor Castle for breeding. Thus, it gradually became a highly regarded herding dog in Britain. By the late 1990s, it also gained popularity among Americans.
In 1940, the herding dog became famous for its role in the movie ‘Lassie’ (adapted from a classic novel). For centuries, outside of Scotland, few knew of this herding dog. Now it has become one of the most popular breeds in the world. This dog has always been a dedicated guardian of cattle and sheep, known for its serious work ethic and intelligence. It has gained fame in television shows. In America, children consider this breed to be the most charming hunting dog.
By 1860, this breed had already caught the attention of Queen Victoria. In 1872, a beautiful dog of black and gray color was born, rising in reputation and having two variants, one being a long-haired dog with a full coat and the other a short-haired dog. Most people prefer the long-haired Scottish Sheepdog.
