Breed Introduction
Originated in China. It dates back to the 17th century.
Legend has it that in the mid-17th century, the Shih Tzu was produced by crossing the Lhasa Apso offered to the Emperor by the Dalai Lama of Tibet with the Pekingese. In 1908, after the death of Empress Dowager Cixi, this breed was secretly shipped to Europe.
Shih Tzus are small and clever, known for their docile nature. It is said that the breeding of Shih Tzus was managed by certain eunuchs, who competed to breed small dogs that would please the emperor.
The Shih Tzu Club was established in the UK in 1935, and subsequently, they were introduced to Scandinavian countries and other European countries as well as Australia. During World War II, American military stationed in the UK took them back to the United States. The American Kennel Club began registering Shih Tzus in 1969.
