Breed Introduction
The South Russian Shepherd Dog is an excellent guard dog, cold-resistant, but not easy to train and not suitable for city life. Strong, agile, brave, and alert, it has a dominant tendency towards other dogs and requires strict and appropriate training. Favored by Soviet soldiers, the South Russian Shepherd Dog is still sometimes used by the Russian military to guard flocks.
The ancestors of the South Russian Shepherd Dog may be the Tibetan Mastiff, which arrived in Eastern Europe several hundred or even thousands of years ago during migrations or invasions of Asian populations.
Recently, Russia has reported breeding individuals of the South Russian Shepherd Dog in its western regions. If socialized and raised like puppies, this aloof, elegant, tenacious, and independent South Russian Shepherd Dog is quite sensitive to training.
